Abstract

DANZEN (TSP) is a protease which is known to have potent anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous effects. It is produced by a strain of the genus Serratia and is proved to be effective after oral administration.
A clinical trial of Danzen tablets was made on 41 patients who were suffering from local swelling or who underwent operative procedures, seen in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital during the period from May to July, 1974.
Following observations were made:
1) Danzen tablets were highly effective for the suppression of postoperative swelling in non-infected cases, particularly those with fractures.
2) Post-operative effect of Danzen tablets in infected cases was good in 77%, while in acutely infected or in pre-operatively used cases, the effect was generally good.
3) The side effects were negligible with rare exceptions of gastrointestinal disturbance.
